Aegon is an international financial services group with its roots dating back almost 180 years. Our ambition is to build leading businesses that offer their customers investment, protection, and retirement solutions, always with a clear purpose: Helping people live their best lives.  And, as a leading global investor and employer, we aim to have a positive impact by addressing critical environmental and societal issues. 

We are headquartered in the Netherlands, have our legal seat in Bermuda, and are listed on Euronext Amsterdam and the New York Stock Exchange.

Fully owned businesses 

Our largest business, Transamerica, is a leading provider of life insurance, retirement, and investment solutions in the US. The company, which serves over ten million customers, has a strong track record of making financial services available to the many, not just the few. In June 2023, we announced our plans to accelerate Transamerica’s growth to become America’s leading middle-market life insurance and retirement company. 

Central to this plan is World Financial Group (WFG), Transamerica’s affiliated insurance distribution network of more than 87,000 independent agents that distribute Transamerica’s products, as well as those of other insurers.

In the United Kingdom, Aegon UK is a leading investment platform with around 3.7 million customers. The company provides a broad range of pension, savings and investment solutions. In June 2024, we announced our plans to accelerate the transformation of the company into the UK’s leading digital savings and retirement platform.  

Our active global investment management business, Aegon Asset Management, which has EUR 332 billion of assets under management as of 2H 2024, services a global client base consisting of pension plans, public funds, insurance companies (including Aegon’s subsidiaries and partnerships), banks, wealth managers, family offices, and foundations.

In Asia, Transamerica Life Bermuda is a leading life insurance provider with extensive expertise in all aspects of high-net-worth wealth protection, including handling large sums assured and complex cases supporting legacy and business planning. 

Aegon also operates in Spain via its distribution channel, Aegon España, which offers life insurance, health insurance, and pension products.

Partnerships

In Brazil, Aegon has a 59.2% economic interest, and 50% of voting common shares, in Mongeral S.A. Seguros e Previdência (MAG Seguros), the country’s third-largest independent life insurer. MAG Seguros offers individual protection solutions. Together with Banco Cooperativo do Brasil, MAG Seguros also operates a joint venture company dedicated to providing life insurance and pension products within the Sicoob, Brazil's largest cooperative financial system. 

In Spain & Portugal, Aegon has a partnership with Banco Santander to distribute life, health, and non-life insurance products through the bank’s branches, with Aegon owning a 51% stake in the joint venture. 

In addition, Aegon Asset Management owns 49% of Aegon-Industrial Fund Management Company, a Shanghai-based asset manager offering mutual funds, segregated accounts and advisory services in China. 

In France, Aegon Asset Management owns 25% of La Banque Postal Asset Management. 

In China, Aegon owns a 50% stake in Aegon THTF Life Insurance Company, which offers life insurance solutions through a network of branches, primarily in eastern China.

Strategic shareholding

In July 2023, Aegon completed the transaction to combine its Dutch pension, life and non-life insurance, banking, and mortgage origination activities with a.s.r. As part of the transaction, Aegon received EUR 2.2 billion in cash proceeds and a 29.99% strategic shareholding in a.s.r. 
The completion of the transaction also marked the beginning of Aegon’s asset management partnership with a.s.r.

Our history    

Our story began in the mid-1800s. Right from the start, the companies who later became part of Aegon were founded on similar principles to those that inform our businesses’ own behaviors and purpose today: helping people live their best lives.  

In the Netherlands, Aegon's earliest predecessor was Algemeene Friesche Begrafenisfonds, a burial fund in the northern Dutch province of Friesland in 1844. Burial funds were set up to provide funeral insurance to small communities to ensure that peoples’ loved ones could be buried with dignity.  

Sixty years later in the US, the company that would one day become Transamerica was founded in 1904 by Amadeo Giannini, a young entrepreneur who was determined to bring financial opportunities to the many, not just the few. A couple of years later, Giannini would play an important role in helping people to rebuild their lives and businesses following the San Francisco earthquake.  

Over the years, these companies grew and merged with others to become the components that make up Aegon’s businesses today. And, while the technology our businesses now use to serve their clients may have changed considerably, their core behaviors and purpose remain very similar to those of the people who began Aegon’s story around 180 years ago.
