America’s 250th anniversary is a powerful reminder that progress begins with access and opportunity. Those same principles have shaped our main business Transamerica for more than a century—from Amadeo Giannini's founding vision to the focus today on helping more people live their best life. It's legacy that Aegon is committed to advancing as we continue on our own American journey.
The United States was founded with the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The 250th anniversary of that milestone invites Americans to reflect on the nation’s founding ideals and what they still make possible. For Transamerica, it is also a moment to look at a history defined by resilience and a belief that freedom gives people the power to shape their own future.
Transamerica writes that its story begins with Amadeo Peter Giannini, the son of Italian immigrants, who founded the Bank of Italy in San Francisco in 1904.
"At a time when many banks focused on wealthy customers and large businesses, Giannini built his institution to serve immigrants, working families, farmers, small businesses, women and others who often could not get help anywhere else. His goal was to provide access to financial services and create opportunities for people who are too often left out.
"Giannini’s approach stood out for the era. He encouraged people who had never used a bank before to open accounts, built trust with customers who had long been overlooked and helped broaden access for underserved communities. He is also credited with backing children’s savings programs and a women’s banking department, reinforcing his belief that opportunity should reach more people. "
