Senior Counsel – Insurance Regulatory Counsel (Life Insurance) - Hybrid
Responsibilities:
Provide legal advice and support in the development, maintenance and offering of life insurance products and services
Prepare, review and negotiate legal contracts, documents and agreements, including marketing, distribution, administration, TPA and/or vendor agreements
Advise on legal risks and potential impacts of business decisions
Provide advice regarding escalated claims and consumer complaints
Monitor, review and interpret relevant changes in laws, rules and regulations, particularly those related to insurance regulations and keep business partners informed of the potential impact to Transamerica’s life insurance business
Draft regulatory responses, disclosures, and other correspondence that may include Market Conduct issues
Collaborate with internal compliance teams to develop and implement policies and procedures to mitigate legal risks
Work on complex legal issues where analysis requires identification and evaluation of multiple factors
Educate business partners and work cross-functionally with compliance, supervision, risk, and business partners to achieve compliance with applicable laws and regulations while minimizing client impact
May review laws and regulations as they relate to employer groups, associations, labor unions, and other non-employer groups to ensure they comply with state law prior to issuing policies
Keep senior business management and operations personnel apprised of pertinent legal and regulatory developments
Exercise independent judgment regarding legal advice with limited supervision of a more senior attorney
Qualifications:
JD from an ABA accredited law school
Member of the Bar in good standing of any US jurisdiction
Senior level experience at a sophisticated law firm or in-house counsel with insurance regulatory legal experience (typically 5+ years)
5 years of relevant legal experience with a focus on life insurance, and state insurance matters with knowledge of relevant laws, rules and regulations
Able to effectively communicate, both written and oral, with the intended audience
Able to exercise sound judgment in a fast-paced environment
Able to exercise agility and adaptability in providing legal advice
Comfortable in a rapidly changing corporate environment
Good organizational and project management skills with an ability to work autonomously and manage multiple priorities
Action oriented, timely and organized with ability to prioritize workload with high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
Employs innovative thinking to assist the business in generating and implementing creative, cost effective and realistic solutions that create business impact and lend toward its growth
Focuses on creating an environment of honesty, inclusion and respect for others, is open to and champions differing ideas and perspectives, and collaborates in a fully inclusive manner
Proficient using MS Office
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with voluntary benefits insurance products including supplemental health and/or long term care, and with the ACA, HIPAA and ERISA laws is preferred
Working Conditions:
Hybrid working environment: Baltimore, Cedar Rapids, Philadelphia, Denver
Occasional travel to meet with leaders, other members of the team, and business partners
Compensation:
The Salary for this position generally ranges between $165,000 - $180,000 annually. Please note that the salary range is a good faith estimate for this position and actual starting pay is determined by several factors including qualifications, experience, geography, work location designation (in-office, hybrid, remote) and operational needs. Salary may vary above and below the stated amounts, as permitted by applicable law.
Additionally, this position is typically eligible for an Annual Bonus based on the Company Bonus Plan/Individual Performance and is at the Company’s discretion.
