Head of Alternative Investments
Responsibilities
• Develop and execute investment strategies across alternative asset classes aligned with portfolio objectives and capital strategy.
• Lead portfolio construction, asset allocation, and optimization decisions across alternative investments.
• Source, evaluate, diligence, and select third-party asset managers and investment partners.
• Oversee external manager onboarding, governance, and ongoing compliance with investment guidelines and mandates.
• Analyze investment opportunities across alternative strategies and recommend transactions that support risk and return objectives.
• Structure and evaluate complex transactions and investment vehicles, including terms, risks, and operational considerations.
• Monitor performance, risk exposures, and key return drivers using portfolio analytics and modeling; identify underperformance risks and recommend corrective actions.
• Prepare quarterly and ad hoc portfolio performance and risk reporting for senior leadership and key stakeholders.
• Conduct benchmarking, market, and sector analysis to inform investment decisions and portfolio strategy.
• Lead, coach, and develop team members and support other portfolio managers as needed.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, business, or related field
• Twelve years of experience in alternative investments, investment management, or related financial services roles
• Leadership experience in portfolio management with understanding of alternative investment strategies
• Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills
• Proficient in financial modeling, data analysis, and portfolio management and analytics tools, including Microsoft Excel
Preferred Qualificaitons
• Experience within a United States life insurer investment organization
• Experience investing in asset managers, including ownership stakes or strategic partnerships
• Master of Business Administration (MBA)
• Charted Financial Analyst (CFA)
• Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA)
Working Conditions
• Office Environment
• Occasional extended hours during peak reporting cycles or time-sensitive transactions
• Moderate (10-25%) travel
• Travel for internal leadership meetings, manager due diligence, and key stakeholder engagement
